What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. At Aurelia Aesthetics, we exclusively use premium hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers — a naturally occurring sugar already present in your skin and joints — which are both safe and fully reversible.

As we age, we gradually lose facial volume, collagen, and bone density. Fillers address this by replenishing volume in strategic areas, supporting the overlying skin, and restoring the youthful proportions that define a healthy, rested appearance.

Unlike Botox, which relaxes muscles, fillers physically add structure and volume. Used together, they complement each other to address virtually every aspect of facial ageing without surgery.

The Fillers We Use

We exclusively use FDA-approved, clinically proven hyaluronic acid fillers from leading medical-aesthetic manufacturers. HA fillers are our preference because they are biocompatible, gradual in onset, and — most importantly — fully reversible with hyaluronidase if needed. Different formulations have different properties, making them suited to different areas and goals.

Fine & Delicate

Thin, soft formulations for superficial lines, lip vermillion border, and tear trough. Spreads smoothly under thin skin with minimal risk of visible texture.

Medium Density

Versatile, cohesive formulations for lip body, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and moderate cheek enhancement.

Structural / Volumising

Firmer, longer-lasting formulations for deep cheek volumisation, jawline definition, chin projection, and temporal hollowing.

Where Can Fillers Be Used?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be placed in a wide range of areas across the face. Longevity varies by location because areas with more movement (like the lips) metabolise filler more quickly than structural areas (like the temples or jawline).

Area What It Addresses Duration
Lips Volume, definition, hydration, symmetry, border enhancement 6–9 months
Cheeks Volume restoration, lift, facial proportion and youthfulness 12–18 months
Nasolabial Folds Softening of smile lines running from nose to mouth corners 9–12 months
Marionette Lines Lines extending downward from the mouth corners 9–12 months
Jawline Definition, sharpening, and contouring of the lower face profile 12–18 months
Chin Projection, balance, and lengthening for improved facial harmony 12–18 months
Under-Eye (Tear Trough) Hollowness, dark circles due to volume loss, tired appearance 12–18 months
Temples Volume restoration to prevent a gaunt, aged look at the sides of the forehead 12–18 months

What to Expect on the Day

At Aurelia Aesthetics, every filler treatment begins with a thorough consultation and facial assessment. We take a conservative, additive approach — placing less than you might expect, then reassessing. You can always add more; the art is in restraint.

01

Consultation & Mapping

Your physician assesses facial structure at rest and in motion, discusses your goals, and creates a personalised treatment map.

02

Numbing

Topical anaesthetic is applied for 15–20 minutes. Most premium fillers also contain lidocaine for added comfort.

03

Injection

Using ultra-fine needles or blunt cannulas, filler is precisely placed in agreed areas. Most treatments take 30–45 minutes.

04

Review & Ice

Results are assessed immediately. Ice is applied to reduce swelling. A 2-week review appointment is scheduled.

What Happens After Treatment?

Most patients experience some degree of swelling and tenderness immediately after filler treatment — this is normal and temporary. Final results are best assessed at 2 weeks, once all swelling has resolved and the filler has fully integrated.

Day 1

Immediately After — Swelling & Tenderness

Swelling is expected, particularly in mobile areas like the lips. Results may look overfilled at this stage. Minor bruising may appear.

Day 3

Days 2–4 — Peak Swelling

Swelling often peaks around day 2–3 before beginning to subside. Bruising, if present, may also intensify slightly before fading.

1 wk

Week 1 — Significant Improvement

The majority of swelling has resolved. Results are beginning to look more natural. Most bruising has faded considerably.

2 wk

Week 2 — Final Assessment

Swelling is fully resolved. Filler has integrated with surrounding tissue. This is the optimal time for your follow-up review.

Dissolving Fillers — Your Safety Net

One of the key advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be fully dissolved using hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA. This can be done at any time — whether to correct placement, manage a complication, or simply because you change your mind.

At Aurelia, we keep hyaluronidase on-site at all times and our physicians are trained in its use. Your safety and satisfaction are always the priority.

Before & After Care

Proper preparation and aftercare will help ensure the best possible outcome and minimise the risk of bruising and swelling.

Before Your Treatment

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil) for 5–7 days prior. Consult your GP before stopping prescribed medication.
  • Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before treatment.
  • Stay well-hydrated — good hydration supports HA integration.
  • Arrive with a clean face. Avoid vitamin E supplements for 1 week prior.
  • Disclose all previous filler treatments, including provider and products used if known.
  • Schedule treatment at least 3–4 weeks before any major event to allow full settling.

After Your Treatment

  • Apply ice gently for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off during the first few hours to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid touching, massaging, or pressing on treated areas for 24–48 hours.
  • Sleep elevated (extra pillow) for the first 1–2 nights to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, heat, saunas, and steam rooms for 48 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 48 hours post-treatment.
  • Do not receive dental treatment or facial massage for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid flying for 24–48 hours if possible, as cabin pressure can worsen swelling.
  • Contact us immediately if you experience any unusual pain, blanching of the skin, or vision changes.

Risks & Considerations

Dermal fillers are among the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures globally and have an excellent safety record in experienced hands. That said, informed consent is fundamental to our practice. We discuss all potential risks during your consultation.

Common Side Effects (Temporary)

  • Swelling, redness, and tenderness at injection sites
  • Bruising (varies by area and individual)
  • Lumps or firmness resolving over 1–2 weeks
  • Asymmetry adjustable at the 2-week review
  • Tyndall effect (bluish tinge) if placed too superficially

Rare but Serious Risks

  • Vascular occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel) — managed immediately with hyaluronidase
  • Infection — treated with antibiotics
  • Delayed nodules or granuloma formation
  • Allergic reaction (extremely rare with HA fillers)
  • Vision changes (if near the eye — requires immediate attention)

Frequently Asked Questions

Not in experienced hands. The over-filled, pillow-face appearance comes from excessive product and poor placement — not from fillers themselves. At Aurelia, we follow the principle of "less is more," using conservative amounts placed with precision to enhance your natural proportions rather than alter them. Our goal is that you look like yourself, only better rested and more defined.

Duration ranges from 6 months (lips) to 18 months (structural areas like the jawline and cheeks). Factors that affect longevity include the area treated, the type and density of filler used, your individual metabolism, and your lifestyle. High levels of physical activity and certain medications can accelerate breakdown. Regular top-ups maintain results continuity.

Topical anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment, and most of our fillers contain lidocaine — a local anaesthetic — within the product itself. Discomfort varies by area: the lips tend to be the most sensitive, while cheeks and jawline are well-tolerated. Our physicians are trained to work at a pace and technique that prioritises your comfort throughout.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved at any time using hyaluronidase. This enzyme breaks down the HA quickly and effectively, allowing for partial or complete reversal. We keep hyaluronidase on-site and offer dissolution services to both our patients and those who have received fillers elsewhere. This reversibility is one of the primary reasons we choose HA fillers exclusively.

Botox relaxes muscles to soften dynamic lines caused by expression. Fillers add physical volume and structure to areas affected by volume loss or static lines present even at rest. They are complementary rather than competing treatments — many patients benefit from both. A combination approach often addresses the face more comprehensively than either treatment alone. Our physicians will advise whether a combination plan is appropriate during your consultation.
